Here are some quick sketches of my setting for my story. With most of my initial story ideas the settings is a place were someone goes to be on their own and to dream. So with these sketches I have tried to make the attic seem realistic and a place were someone would go regularly to be on their own.

Ideas So Far ...
Here are my initial ideas they are really rough at the moment ....
1. Starts with a young boy who has been sent to the attic to clean it up as his punishment. But instead of tidying up as he was told, he decided to muck around with what he can find in the attic. One object he comes across is a unicycle, deciding to have a go he ends up on falling on a covered up old chest. In a mood he kicks the chest but the lock breaks off and it pops open. curiosity gets to him and decides to have a peak inside the chest. To find and old astronaut uniform covered in dust. He decides to put the uniform on and as he takes the uniform of the chest he sees and old scrapbook. Going through the scrapbook he see photos after photo but does not recognise anyone. Until he comes across a newspaper clipping and he recognises the man in the photo as he grandfather. But then a shadow appears over him he turns around in shock to find his grandfather looking down at him. The boy thinks he is going to be told off what he has found but instead his grandad starts to smile as the memories of his past start to come flooding back to him. They both sit together as he tells the stories of he times as an astronaut as the boy himself sits in the uniform and listen with at enjoyment at his grandfather stories.
2. An attic is the perfect place for a little boy who's dream is to be an astronaut. It is the nearest he can get to the stars, just sitting and dream of going into space on day. We start with a little boy dress in astronaut pj's climbing the stairs to the attic when he get the to top and the door states that NO ENTRY!. Turning the light on first reveals just a bunch of boxes and some random object like a TV, clothes and even a unicycle. But the boy just walks straight through all of it and behind a stack of boxes. Behind those boxes is where the boy has created he own space ship just near the window. He pretends that he is sent up to space and he just sits there looking out of the window up into the sky at the stars. But then he is brought back into reality when he can he his mum shouting his name. Then all of a sudden a shadow appears and the attic door and the boy knows that it is time for him to go. But he will back tomorrow to dream again that hopefully that one day he will be able to fly into space. The boy walks to the door and just stares back and finally closes the attic door.
3. A retired astronaut spends his days trying to find something that makes him feel alive again like just like he did when he was in space. But nothing can replace that feeling and every time he tries he fails and makes him feel that little bit depressed. He latest try was to learn how the ride and unicycle but like everything else it failed. He places the unicycle with everything else he has tried in his attic. As he goes to walk out he catches a glimpse of a photo hanging on the wall, a crew photo on their first mission. He walks to the back of the attic to a dusty old wardrobe that looks as if it has not been opened in years. He hesitates but opens the wardrobe to reveal his uniform and for a while he just stands in silence. Putting that uniform on makes him feel alive again like it did the very first time he put in on 40 years ago. But he knows that it is the past and takes it off and hangs it back up. Shutting the wardrobe door and backing away to leave the attic. But as he goes to shut the attic door he turns around and smiles to himself.
4. A grumpy old retired astronaut uses his attic as a perfect place to hide form his wife and spend most of his days there. In a attic that is fall of storage but somehow he has found away to make it feels like his own den the perfect place of him and him alone. His wife notices that he goes to attic in a huff but returns in a better mood. But what know one knows is that when he is up in the attic on his own he like to pretend that he is a astronaut still. Putting on his old uniform and re acting his memories make him feel happy again like as if he was still an astronaut. The reason for why he is always in a better mood when he returns. But one day when he was in his attic he does not hear the knock on the attic door. The door opens to reveal his grandson and to his shock he sees his grandfather dress as a astronaut. They both stare at each other and burst into laughter, this was the first time the boy had seen his grandfather so happy. They spend the rest of the day re acting and listen to his stories, With the pair falling asleep after a enjoyable day.

Film Review - Rope (1948)
Fig.1 Rope Film Poster
Alfred Hitchcock 1948 film "Rope" is acknowledged as one of his more experimental films. This was an adaption of Patrick Hamilton’s stage play which itself was based on a true story, the famous Leopold and Loeb murder case.
The victim screams bringing us inside the apartment. There we find Brandon Shaw and Phillip Morgan have murdered their friend David Kentley. In an act to prove they are more superior to others. They decide to hide his body in a large wooden chest in the middle of their apartment. The friend’s vicious act was inspired by their college professor Rupert Cadell. Who himself believes that murder should be a socially acceptable practice in certain situations.

Later that evening, Brandon and Phillip are hosting a dinner party that will take place in their apartment. Brandon decides that it would be amazing to serve the dinner buffet on the chest itself. This kind of chilling touch according to Brandon, will convert a work of art into a master piece. The dinner guests include Kentley’s father and aunt as well as his fiancĂ© and her ex-boyfriend. With the final guest, their mentor Rupert, who Brandon believes may be able to appreciate the twisted situation. After the guests arrive, the evening grows intense as David’s friends and family worry over his non appearance at the party. With the subject of murder continuously being raised in the conversations, and the agitated behaviour of Phillip, Rupert starts to become suspicious and begins to put 2 and 2 together.

The scenes in the film are no more than about a series of short takes, edited together to created the appearance of one continuous shot throughout the film. This makes the viewers feel like they are watching a stage performance not an actual film. "The reason the film works so well however, is not a benefit of the script, but more of the manner in which it was filmed." (Pitt,2005) This style of directing that Hitchcock used was the first film to attempt this style of filmmaking. Not making him the last as several other directors have continued to used this style of filmmaking.
There is one particular scene in the film when the camera is place in a particular position, we watch as the maid is cleaning off the top of chest. With the intention of putting a number of books back in the wooden chest. The view we are seeing is that which is where they placed the body at the beginning of film. With this style of directing that Hitchcock uses it make this scene incredibly suspenseful as we watch and wait for what is about to happen. Any other director could have decided to edit this scene so that it did not seem as long but this would have taken away some of the suspense.

"Rope" is one of Hitchcock’s more experimental films. With it being set in just one location and that it was shot in 8 minute takes, which appear to merge into each other. It can be said that "Rope as an experiment with it not only being his first film in colour but also that it was shot in long 8 minute takes and this technique which combined with it being set in one location, predominantly a single room really delivers that feel of being a play" (MovieScene, 2008)

"Rope" "is remembered primarily for its technical brilliance – it’s immaculately lit, and the camera never stops moving around, following the guest from room to room, with the few cuts hidden almost to the point of invisibility" (Croce, 2006) creating the illusion that the viewer is part of the film.

Astronaut (Character) - Influence Map
From left to Right :-
Images 1, 2 & 4. Are just a variety of images of astronauts I found.
Image 3. Is the uniform that an astronaut wears.
Image 5. Buzz Light year - The reason why I put this image on my influence map was because instead of having a human astronaut I could look at the idea of my character actually being a toy instead.
Image 6. Neil Armstrong - Looking at the lives of astronauts to help with creating my own back story for my character.
Life Drawing (Lesson 12)
Yesterdays life drawing we worked on how to portray the movement of the model in our work. At the beginning of the lesson I found it challenging to try and capture the movement in my work. But by the end I think that my drawings expressed some movement of the model.
Unicycle (Prop) Influence Map
When researching into my choosen prop I found out that there are lot of different types of unicycles that you can get. So my influence map shows some of the many different types of unicycles there are. Each type has it own qualities and advantages to make them unique
Starting form the top left corner :-
Image 1. Giraffe Unicycle
Image 2 & 5- Standard Unicycle
Image 3. Impossible Unicycle
Image 4. Cruiser Unicycle
Image 6. Mountain Unicycle
Image 7. Mono wheel Unicycle
Knowing that there are variety of different types of unicycle may help me when incorporating my prop into my story-board.
Research & Influence Map - For Setting (Attic)
An attic is a space found directly below the roof of a house or any other building. Also it can be called a garret, a loft or sky parlor. As attics fill the space between the ceiling of the top floor of a building and the slanted roof. They have been known for there awkwardly shaped spaces with exposed rafters and has the difficulty to access the corners. While some attics are converted into bedrooms or home offices, complete with windows and staircases. But most attics remain hard to get to, becoming neglected and are typically used for storage.
Influence Map
With this influence map it manly shows a variety of different attics that have been neglected over time as well as filled with storage. And over time it becomes a dark, dusty abandoned space making it a great place to have a setting for a story.
