Unit Space - Progress So Far

Here is a quick summary of my progress half way through the project.

Initial Thumbnails
So far i have produce between 30 - 40 thumbnails but I think that I can develop what I have got so far even further. Looking back at the stories I was given I think that there are several other description that I could experiment with. The ones that I am looking at the moment are The Pit and the Pendulum torture chamber and first impression of the dungeon. The third one is the external description go the House of Usher.

Final Pieces
So far I have only got one idea that I am definitely sure that I would want to in my  final three paintings that we have to  produced this is the description of the dungeon when wakes up. With this idea I have started to develop it further on photoshop but there is still things that I can see need development. So the next step is to get them on my blog for you to see.

Research
I think that further research and producing some more influence maps may help me focus on what I have got so far and how I could improve on my initial Ideas. This may even help me produce some fresh thumbnails that I would like develop because at the moment I am just focusing on three certain description and there are many more that I could look within the stories. That may even be more interesting than the ones that I already picked.

Essay
For my essay I am going to go with my initial idea which was the film Alien so the next step for me is to watch the film. Then begin research into the film by looking at books, Internet sources and reviews.

    Hey Sasha,

What I REALLY want to see from you is a bit more 'razzle dazzle'! I know you're a quiet one, and I think perhaps that you worry about stuff too much. I just want to see you buzzing, with a blog and body-of-work to match. It's not that you're doing anything wrong or I'm disappointed. It's just I can't help feeling that you could be having more fun with this creative lark. There is something small and shy about your blog, when I want it to be BIG and SHOUTY! :-)

In truth, there's not a huge amount on here, but you did say that much of your Photoshop work is landlocked on a computer. That said, there is something important missing and that's your research into Poe himself. Remember I'm particularly interested in your 'visual concept' - i.e. the guiding principle that shapes your design of the spaces in response to the text. Remember too, that you're being asked to 'imagineer' environments for a cg ANIMATION - not a life action film - which means, in terms of style and expressiveness, your spaces can depart from photorealism and embrace other 'isms' - Expressionism, for example (an art movement that sought to express human feelings through mark-making and physical spaces), or Romanticism, of which Poe was a part - which favoured the gothic and the supernatural. What you're NOT being asked to produce is illustrations for the book - you're not drawing, you're making a world. In order to do that successfully, you need your visual concept - your visual rule book. I'd suggest that, Poe being Poe, and the subject matter being what it is, you could afford to take a few more steps from 'realism' and investigate more stylised ways of shaping these spaces. If you haven't done so already, I suggest you look at some of the artists who have been drawn to describing Poe's world; for example:

but, for that same level of anxiety in Poe's stories, check out Edvard Munch...

“Countless interpretations have been advanced, of the book and of the film, from almost every conceivable angle: political, economic, religious, feminist, Freudian, you name it.”
