Essay Research - Alien 1979

“In space no one can hear you scream"

Just watched the film for the first time and it was just so good that I had to watch the second one Aliens. And I cant wait to watch the other two film's hopefully they will be as good as  the ones that I have already watched. I am so glad that I have chosen this film for my essay because there is so much I can talk about and I cant wait to research into the film a bit more.

Here is a quote that I found that totally sums the film up.

Here is a quick summary of the plot. The film follows a spaceship with 7 crewman aboard. On their way back to earth when they hear a distress signal which sends them to an alien planet to investigate. When they land they finds a ship that had crashed there many years ago. They also  discover hundreds of cocoon-like pods and out of one pod springs an alien fetus that latches onto the face of a crew member. They then lay eggs in their hosts and then die off. Well that what you think until we learn that the eggs grow into an alien creature that bursts out of the host’s chest. Quickly growing into a full-fledged acid-spewing  killing machine on a rampage to kill everyone.

When I looked through a couple of reviews of the film I saw that there was this quote that kept popping up

but I found that the first part of the film is the best part. It is not be like the rest of the film but it does have some outstanding set pieces that look so real life. I have only seen photos of HR Giger's work for this film in some books that I found but it is just amazing how the set pieces themselves just started of from just little thumbnails.

Well then there's the Alien itself which a pretty disgusting looking creature. With the alien itself and the set pieces this is what made the film what it is today.

  1. Sasha! I KNEW you'd enjoy it - and Aliens is a bloody great movie! I love Alien 3 too - lots of people don't - and I love the first 40 minutes or so of Alien Resurrection (the basketball scene is fab), but after that... :-(

Check out all the 'psycho-sexual' stuff written about Alien - rape imagery, 'body-horror' etc. You'll need to figure out what 'Freudian' means too - lots and lots of content for your essay!

  2. Yer it was great film. I enjoyed the second one Aliens out of the two but haven't watch the other films yet. Will look at all that to help with writing my essay. I was wondering when it comes to writing my essay could i talk a bit about the other films and compare them to each other.

  3. Personally, I'd recommend sticking to Alien - it's the original 'text', from which the movies borrow and adapt; Alien has the purest relationship to production design - and there's oodles to be researching and reading about, so stick with Alien - and write meaningfully about it.

Also - and this is really BORING of me - but, when you write on your blog, do watch your capitalisation (for instance 'i' instead of 'I') and your spelling is a bit ropey too. Don't listen to anyone who says that stuff like this doesn't matter - it does - people judge individuals on this all the time - indeed, employers use it as a reason to ditch cvs from the slush-pile. As 'school-like' as this must sound, I'd really like you to proof read your text before you publish online. Imagine if I was to communicate with you without first checking my spelling etc. I'd be a laughing stock! It IS important... anyway, lecture over :-)

  4. Phil will tell you that this film is famous for its 'hidden' meanings behind (more than anything else) its design and art style.
however, when i was looking into this last year, 2 words that came up time and time again were: Aporia & Abjection.
definitely have a look at those words, especially in relation to ripley
